I was born in Japan and grew up in Los Angeles and Tokyo. I spent a lot of time shuttling back and forth, and I like to think that the constant switching and weekend language schools prevented me from having what otherwise would have been a career as a brilliant ballplayer (probably MLB, NBA or NFL are stretches even for my imagination).
I'm a lateral from a large LA-based international firm, and before coming on board, I had reservations about the diversity of the firm. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Ropes & Gray had a significant number of attorneys of color, many at the partner level. As a firm, we tend to be somewhat shy about promoting ourselves, but I really do think we can be proud of our track record in both the number of diverse attorneys of color we have and our record of promoting them to partnership.
