I joined Ropes as a lateral associate in 2008. Before coming to Ropes, I knew of its outstanding reputation, especially in intellectual property law – my practice area. What I found when I came here is a culture distinct among large law firms in its ability to consistently deliver excellent client service while fostering teamwork among diverse and dynamic individuals. That goes beyond mere collegiality. Attorneys at all levels are respected for what they bring to the table and encouraged to thrive. One of the best things about being a lawyer is the learning that each new issue brings. At Ropes, that’s been incorporated into the culture such that each new team and every cross-disciplinary matter is recognized as an opportunity for the attorneys -- and the firm -- to learn and grow. The result is a law firm in which you get to work on interesting and complex matters in a stimulating and collaborative environment. In the time that I have been here, I have worked with lawyers from across Ropes’ offices on a wide variety of matters, including patent litigations, trade secret disputes, unfair competition trials, and a substantial patent portfolio acquisition. Before becoming a lawyer, I worked as a software developer for several years in Washington, D.C. That experience ranged from developing a smart card system for colleges and universities to management consulting for defense contractors. After law school, I became a registered patent attorney to continue to leverage my computer science background. As an intellectual property litigator, I now get to work with many different technologies in a variety of industries, including computer software, electronics, telecommunications, financial services and consumer products. Currently, I live in Manhattan walking distance from the firm’s midtown offices. After work and weekends, I enjoy trying out the city’s restaurants and music venues. I also mentor teens at a multi-cultural church in downtown Brooklyn. Whenever I can, I jet away to any destination where I can find great food, good music and interesting people.
