I am a second-generation Korean-American and I have spent most of my life in the Boston area. My parents came to the United States in the 1960s to pursue graduate degrees and they eventually settled in Lexington, Massachusetts. As my parents are both science professors with a traditional view on education, it is not surprising that I ended up majoring in Chemistry at MIT. However, I never felt like the lab was the right place for me, so after graduation, I worked as a strategy consultant for three years, primarily for life sciences companies. Although I traveled all around the world as a consultant, I always felt like Boston was my home, and luckily, I was able to attend law school here. In 2005, I started as an associate at Ropes & Gray in Boston after being a summer associate here in 2004. I have been able to pursue my interest in the life sciences industry by working primarily as a corporate associate for both private and public biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. One of the major factors in my decision to come to Ropes & Gray was the firm's commitment to diversity. Not only does the firm devote time and resources to create formal groups and structures for Attorneys of Color (AOC), but the attorneys in the AOC Group have created an extraordinary environment that fosters informal support and mentoring across all levels. Additionally, the firm is more than willing to help us participate in other groups promoting diversity in the Boston legal community, such as the Asian American Lawyers Association of Massachusetts and the Boston Lawyers Group. This constant professional and personal support from my fellow Attorneys of Color eased my transition into my legal career and I am excited to contribute to that continued growth and energy.
