I was born in Charlotte, North Carolina and grew up in the segregated South. It was the motivation of my parents and the interest and assistance of my high school guidance counselor/science teacher that helped me come to Boston to attend Harvard College, where I initially majored in engineering and applied physics. During college, I took a leave of absence to work for a NASA subcontractor and engineering firm. After nearly completing my one-year leave, I was drafted into the U.S. Army. I was selected for Officer Candidate School and later did a tour of duty in Germany, because my brother was already serving in Vietnam. One of the duties of junior officers was to serve in various roles within the military justice system, including defense counsel and prosecutor; it was this duty that stimulated my interesting being a trial lawyer. After my release from active duty in 1968, I completed my undergraduate studies and attended Harvard Law School.

As you can see, I came to law and Ropes & Gray through a more circuitous route than most. I have been very pleased and proud that since my joining the firm in 1974, our Attorneys of Color group now numbers over 150 and represents approximately 30 partners of color and 20% of the associates in our six U.S. and three international offices. I have served on the Associates Review and Hiring committees, as head of the Litigation group, on the firm’s Diversity committee and the Executive Committee of the Boston Lawyers Group (formerly the Boston Law Firm Group), which I helped found almost two decades ago. I look forward to the continuing growth of diversity among our lawyers and staff and to the contributions that growth will make in the strength and character of the firm’s practice.
