While the vast majority of our entry-level associates join the firm
out of the Summer Program, we supplement our entry-level hiring with
selective offers to 3Ls and judicial clerks who did not summer with
us. We apply our summer hiring standards in evaluating these candidates,
and those who join us have equal success in practice. Our need to look
to these sources varies by year, however, so law students interested
in starting their careers at Ropes & Gray are well advised to apply
for a position in our summer program.
Bill Appleyard (Boston College Law School '07), came to Ropes & Gray as a 3L after having summered elsewhere at Gunderson Dettmer in New York.
Entry-level lawyers who do federal appellate, district court or state supreme court clerkships immediately following law school and who then join Ropes & Gray are treated as members of their law school class for purposes of seniority and compensation, and they may be eligible for a clerkship bonus when they join the firm. Approximately 13% of the entry-level associates who joined the firm in the last three years did so after having clerked for one or two years.
Matt McGinnis (Boston College Law School '06) clerked on the Federal Court of Appeals before joining Ropes & Gray in the 10th Circuit.
Amanda Raad (Indiana University School of Law, Bloomington '05) and Thomas Brown (Harvard Law School '06) each did a state supreme court clerkship after law school – Amanda in Indiana and Thomas in Massachusetts.
