Though locals insist there's no need to ever leave Chicago, there's plenty to see and do in nearby locales. Springfield, Illinois' state capital, is home to the Lincoln Memorial site. Wisconsin provides endless opportunities for exploration. Milwaukee is known for its breweries, but it also has a great art museum, area shopping and galleries. The House on the Rock in Spring Green contains eclectic collections that shouldn't be missed. And for a great weekend getaway, head to picturesque Madison or the Wisconsin Dells, the "Waterpark Capital of the World." There's an artists' colony on the beach of Saugatuck, MI that is worth exploring, as well as the Meyer May House in Grand Rapids which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

And last but not least, racing fans will want to visit Arlington Racetrack in Illinois or take a day trip to Indianapolis to see the Indy 500.

The picturesque Chicago River cuts through downtown Chicago and is controlled by a series of locks directing the river's flow toward the Mississippi River Basin. It is famously dyed green in celebration of St. Patrick's Day every year.
