Macau and Shenzhen are both wonderful day-trip destinations for shopping and dining. They are old, yet modern cities with historical monuments, dramatic casinos, and an exciting nightlife. Macau has a colonial past that is more than 300 years older than that of Hong Kong, and it has managed to preserve a superb collection of historic buildings and ramshackle backstreets. Don't miss the beautiful Baroque churches, old fortresses, and culturally-rich architecture. Mainland China's closest neighboring city to Hong Kong is Shenzhen. It is a manufacturing powerhouse probably best known for its bargain shopping—where haggling for the best price is expected.

This historically-significant pagoda can be seen at the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery, a beautiful temple in Shatin, Hong Kong.

Mong Kok, in the Kowloon Peninsula, is said to have the highest population density in the world. Containing a mixture of old and new multi-story buildings, shops and restaurants are at street level and commercial or residential units are above.
