The diversity and beauty of California's coast and landscape are
within easy reach. Just over the Golden Gate Bridge is Marin County,
home to the bayside towns of Sausalito and Tiburon as well as the
redwoods of Muir Woods. Just over the Bay Bridge are Oakland and
Berkeley, home to U.C. Berkeley. The wine country regions of Napa and
Sonoma,
where large and boutique wineries abound, are a little more than an hour away. The spectacular coastline of Big Sur and Carmel, where you can also find world-class golf courses like Pebble Beach, is two hours to the south. And within three hours to the east are Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada mountains, home to ski resorts like the former Winter Olympic site, Squaw Valley. |

To the left, named for conservationist John Muir, the majestic Muir Woods, home to the tallest type of tree in the world, was declared a national monument in 1908. On the right, in the Napa and Sonoma counties, you'll find hundreds of wineries and their exquisite vineyards, which produce some of the world's finest wines. |
