What do we do?
The venture capital arena is where ideas, technology and capital come together to launch new possibilities. At Ropes & Gray, we provide practical, results-oriented guidance to the entire venture capital community, ensuring emerging companies and venture capital investors meet their goals.
Moreover, we foster business relationships between these businesses and investors.

We serve numerous industries including: information technology, computers, electronics, communications, wireless, hardware, software as a service (SaaS), consumer products, internet and digital media, robotics, semiconductors, energy, and cleantech.

Our venture practice is staffed leanly, and usually one or two associates work directly with a partner or a client.

Richard Gluckselig, (The University of Michigan Law School, 2007) works on a wide range of venture capital and emerging company matters.

Personal experiences from some of our associates...

Keith Bauman (Boston University School of Law, '03) an associate from the San Francisco office, describes his practice generally, and highlights recent venture capital transactions that he has completed.

"My practice runs the spectrum of general corporate work. I have worked on mergers, acquisitions, private equity transactions, securities issuances, compliance with reporting requirements, and venture capital deals. I recently represented one of our clients in its $7 million investment in a $22 million round for a privately held innovative developer and manufacturer of diagnostic instrumentation and test kits in the medical field. I also represented one of our medical device clients in its $35 million Series E round."

Julia Ledbetter (University of Wisconsin Law School, '06), an associate from the San Francisco office, describes her experiences working with the Venture Capital Practice Group.

"I have been fortunate to participate in a wide variety of corporate transactions while at Ropes & Gray, but the work in the venture capital area is definitely some of the most interesting. I have had the opportunity to work with both companies seeking financing and investors contributing capital. The opportunity to see both sides of a transaction and to hear the concerns of both parties is a valuable experience. The best part about working in venture capital is that start-up companies feature some extraordinarily interesting concepts and fascinating personalities. I have had the opportunity to see companies working at the cutting edge of medical device development, companies developing the next generation of software to enable new Web 2.0 applications that are used every day and some companies that just have a fun idea that passionate people want to pursue. It is exciting to watch companies develop over time and to know that you helped your clients to succeed."
